I was privileged to be at the Season 3 premiere of Shuga and it was AMAZING!!! We actually got to see 4 episodes of the show (it was cut like a movie) and I must say it was (or should I say “is”) better than all of the Nigerian movies that I have seen (apart from Confusion Na Wa).
Produced by MTV Base and The Staying Alive Foundation and directed by the great Biyi Bandele, Shuga explores the themes of HIV/AIDS, Safe Sex, Domestic Violence and other related issues. I must say the writers of the show did a good job writing a story that Nigerians will be able to relate to. The characters didn’t have unnecessary accents and western mannerisms. This wasn’t a “copy and paste foreign story”. It was unusual. It was real. It was out of the box and it was worth the watch!!!
Oh and the cast. Can I say how fabulous EVERY single one of them was. They all did fantastic jobs!!! Let me at this point say that Tiwa Savage was ON FIRE! This was her debut acting role and I hope she does more movies after this.
Finally, I’d say that Biyi Bandele is the FUTURE of African Cinema. For what he did with this project, and how he was able to interpret the story. I am forever a fan!!!
Check out the pictures guys. Love loved it!!!
